In Search of Mary
In Search of Mary, a feature-length documentary film made by veteran PBS producer Lulie Haddad, will look at the historical truth of Mary Magdalene, as well as what Mary Magdalene has come to represent in contemporary cultures throughout the world. From The Da Vinci Codes to Elaine Pagel's recent academic bestseller, Beyond Belief, Mary Magdalene is in the spotlight. She has become a major focus in the academy and beyond, described by some as an example of a powerful female Jewish leader and by others as the Jesus follower who knew Jesus' truth best. In the tradition of the classic films of Henry Hampton (Eyes on the Prize) in which Haddad was schooled, In Search of Mary aims to marry the soundest scholarship with gripping storytelling to make a documentary that engages audiences young and old.
Hartley Update
In Search of Mary is currently in the research and development phase of pre-production. The producer is continuing to develop a dramatic arc for the film, writing a treatment as well as securing scholars and interviewees. The production team is in the process of identifying both iconic and rare images, archival and present-day, that will help tell this powerful story. They have also assembled an award-winning documentary crew to execute the project. The response to the project has been overwhelming in regards to the need for the historical accuracy of Mary Magdalene's story and interest in a discussion of how she lives in our collective present-day realities.
