The New Muslim Cool
The Halal of Hip Hop
Offering an open dialogue about faith, pluralism and the future of Islam in the West, The New Muslim Cool will give viewers an intimate glimpse of life in one of America's most rapidly growing and least-understood communities as it comes of age in a time of danger and promise.
This hour-long documentary follows four members of a struggling young Muslim hip-hop label as they tour the United States, traveling from Friday prayers at a "counterculture" mosque in Berkeley to a college music festival in Tennessee, from a Muslim-led social service agency on Chicago's South Side to a New York City encounter with members of a controversial new progressive Muslim organization.
Along the way the characters discover a vibrant and diverse community of American Muslim artists, activists and bloggers who are working in the crucible of post-9/11 America to forge a cultural influence that will be felt around the world for generations to come, though its ultimate form is still unknown.
In a passionate dialogue about the shape of Islam in the West - with multiple view points running from the most hard-line traditionalists to the most radical progressives - whose voices will dominate? Can young American Muslims build a cohesive culture that brings together the best of Islam and America, and will the rest of the world be ready for what they have to offer?
